Questions about Academics and COVID-19
What were your classes like in your first year or in your major/concentration, especially transitioning from Shen?
My classes were very easy to transition into the first semester, but the second semester was a little more of a wake up for me. I didn’t really start taking major-specific classes until my sophomore year in the second semester. That usually just depends on your major though.

What academic experiences have stood out to you at your college in either positive or negative ways?
We use a semester system so classes are not rushed. However, we also have an optional winter session which makes our spring semester start and end later than everyone else. I don’t mind it because you have a chance to take an extra class or work in the winter. My university was the first to ever have a study abroad program so I encourage everyone to go if you can. I went to Italy for a winter micromester which was only 3 weeks and that was a perfect situation for me but they also have longer ones and even semester long ones. Half of my classes are very large and the other half are smaller it all depends on what you’re taking so that will change your relationship with your professors. In all my smaller classes I’ve had great relationships with my professors. Also a common thing at Delaware is to move off campus as a sophomore and all the rentals around usually start booking October 1st so it’s a very quick turn around looking for housing the next year if you wanna be off campus.

How was your online learning experience at your college? What resources did your college provide you during this time?
Mine were mostly zoom classes and most professors were fairly flexible with deadlines if you reached out to them. All of my tests personally were made easier too because of everyone happening.

What did your college do well or poorly to support students and communities when COVID-19 first hit?
The one bad thing was they abruptly moved our spring break forward two weeks and told us on a Wednesday that classes were canceled for the rest of the week and the next week. Then a day later told all the on campus students they needed to be packed and out by Sunday. They eventually changed it to later because they realized everyone would be there at the same time so they couldn’t distance. After they extended spring break to two weeks so they would be best organized and ready to start online classes.

Questions about Student Life
If students are interested in your major/concentration, what extracurricular activities do you recommend they do at your college?
I don’t do any major specific extracurriculars. There is a Psychology honors fraternity but I am not in it. I joined a sorority and a dance team at my school to occupy my time and pad my resume.

What are common things to do on weekends? Do students commute back home for the weekend or are there events on campus?
Most people stay for the weekends. We have day parties and football games even though our football team isn’t the best.

Are you involved in athletics at your college? How do you balance sports, academics, and extracurricular activities?
Just a club dance team, we don’t meet very often so it’s not too hard to balance those with regular school work

Do you have a job during the school year, or is it common for students to have on-campus jobs? What is that experience like?
No i don’t work during the year. I don’t know a ton of people who do either.

Extra Questions
What advice would you give to current Shen students when applying to your college?
I never visited before I came either. It wasn’t my number one choice but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I loooooove my school and all the people i’ve met there.

What makes your college special to you?
We have a cute little main street that goes in the middle of campus with a bunch of restaurants. It’s a nice little town pretty much just for the students.

What do you wish you knew about your college when you were a senior at Shen?
I am not sure honestly I didn’t really know anything going in so I don’t think I expected anything specific.

Before COVID-19, what was the housing like at your college? What would you recommend to Shen seniors to find their roommates?
I was off campus so I could’ve stayed if I really wanted but my roommates left so I did too. I went random freshman year though and it worked well for me but it doesn’t for everyone. Just be careful and make sure to ask the right questions if you pick a roommate. Ask when they go to bed and stuff about living together not about their lives. It doesn’t matter if your best friends only if you can comfortably live together. It’s a bonus if you become friends.
