Questions about Academics and COVID-19

What were your classes like in your first year or in your major/concentration, especially transitioning from Shen?

It was a pretty easy transition. Professors were really nice. There’s a variation on class size (some can be 30 and some can be 400). I found it to be exciting.

What academic experiences have stood out to you at your college in either positive or negative ways?

Being in classes for just a semester as opposed to a full year is different. It doesn’t feel like you are moving at any quicker pace though.

How was your online learning experience at your college? What resources did your college provide you during this time?

We used Blackboard and I liked the aspect of being able to do things at my own pace and watching the lectures whenever I wanted to.

What did your college do well or poorly to support students and communities when COVID-19 first hit?

It all happened very quickly. I guess I’d have to say the transition online was seamless and the university did a pretty good job with it.

Questions about Student Life

If students are interested in your major/concentration, what extracurricular activities do you recommend they do at your college?

For business join a professional fraternity called Delta Sigma Pi. I also was in a club for first-years called OrangeSeeds which is great for community service.

What are common things to do on weekends? Do students commute back home for the weekend or are there events on campus?

I came back home a few times but there’s always something going on during the weekend. Whether it be a football/basketball game, tailgates, or going out at night, you’re bound to have a fun time.

Are you involved in athletics at your college? How do you balance sports, academics, and extracurricular activities?

I don’t play any sports at Cuse. But I still go to the gym and play pickup with my friends sometime.

Do you have a job during the school year, or is it common for students to have on-campus jobs? What is that experience like?

I know a few of my friends got a job at the library. I personally wouldn’t do it because I think it would be a bit much.

Extra Questions

What advice would you give to current Shen students when applying to your college?

Do it as early as possible and apply to as many colleges as you think that would fit you.

What makes your college special to you?

I love Syracuse because I think that a lot of people that are like me go there. There’s a great balance of academics and fun on campus. Also there’s a since of school spirit behind our sports.

What do you wish you knew about your college when you were a senior at Shen?

I wish I knew not to worry. I was a little nervous about meeting new people, but in all actuality there was never anything to be nervous about.

Before COVID-19, what was the housing like at your college? What would you recommend to Shen seniors to find their roommates?

Housing is great for Freshman. You get pod bathrooms which are great. When finding roommates definitely go through Facebook and don’t be afraid to be the first one to reach out to people. Try not to go random. I had some friends who regretted going random.

How is the financial aid situation at your college?

They give a good amount of scholarships and aid.

Is there anything else you'd like to share about your college experience that hasn't been addressed yet in this questionnaire?
