Questions about Academics and COVID-19

What were your classes like in your first year or in your major/concentration, especially transitioning from Shen?

I felt like Shen prepared me way better than a lot of my peers freshman year for things like writing research papers and knowing how to stand out in a larger crowd.

What academic experiences have stood out to you at your college in either positive or negative ways?

Positive, I love how everyone knows each other and is so supportive.

Negative, we're DIII so sports suck.

How was your online learning experience at your college? What resources did your college provide you during this time?

Most teachers were very flexible and helpful. The deadlines were clear and they were diligent about checking email and setting up zoom meetings if needed.

Questions about Student Life

If students are interested in your major/concentration, what extracurricular activities do you recommend they do at your college?

I actually recommend doing something way different than your major. Try new things thats how you'll meet more people. I'm not in Math club because I know all the math majors. I am involved in clubs that attract people from a broad selection of majors.

What are common things to do on weekends? Do students commute back home for the weekend or are there events on campus?

I usually hangout with friends. Its not a big party school and I'm not a party-er, so we just hang around campus and watch sports and talk. There is a sizable portion of the locals who go home on weekends but I think it really hurts their social lives, and they're always the first to complain there is nothing to do. All the people who actually stay on campus for the weekend have a great time.

Do you have a job during the school year, or is it common for students to have on-campus jobs? What is that experience like?

Yes and it is very common. The nice thing about on campus jobs is they're built around the schools and class schedule so it is really easy to have hours you are comfortable with.

Extra Questions

What advice would you give to current Shen students when applying to your college?

I love it. If we have your major then definitely consider. However if youre looking for big party school, this isn't it. I thrive in this smaller environment and you can too if you want to.

What makes your college special to you?

The campus. I love the feel and the size and walking around it.

What do you wish you knew about your college when you were a senior at Shen?

LOL, honestly college is not the big massive party that everyone makes it out to be. It is at some of the larger universities (maybe, for some people) but for a lot of people it really is just low-key and chill. You do work and you hang with friends.

Before COVID-19, what was the housing like at your college? What would you recommend to Shen seniors to find their roommates?

At Fisher they assign roommates which I think is great because it takes the stress away (I mean finding your own roommate freshman year is like online dating, and I am WAY too insecure to do that.) At Fisher they assign roommates because they find that when students come in not knowing their roommate it helps encourage them to make more friends.

How is the financial aid situation at your college?

Up to this point it has been VERY generous and supportive. It depends on your major, for instance at Fisher, the nursing program is huge so there are a lot more students fighting from one pool of aid allotted for nursing majors. Being a math major I benefit from math-specific scholarships that a lot less students were competing for. With that being said Fisher is still very generous with aid and every student gets some sort of scholarship. I don't know how that will change due to COVID. I know some schools are really struggling with everything, and while Fisher has made some cuts so far it looks like they are on the better end of the spectrum.

Is there anything else you'd like to share about your college experience that hasn't been addressed yet in this questionnaire?

I LOVE it. Come to Fish. Feel free to reach out with any questions.
