Questions about Academics and COVID-19
What were your classes like in your first year or in your major/concentration, especially transitioning from Shen?
A mix of gen ed’s and major specific classes. Definitely more difficult than high school as standards for performance were much higher than I was used to but with the right amount of effort it was manageable.

What academic experiences have stood out to you at your college in either positive or negative ways?
Professors are eager to help but you have to seek them out and put effort in to find opportunities/help. There are so many ways to get involved in your interests, but not as much time as there was in high school so prioritize what matters most to you and focus on that!

How was your online learning experience at your college? What resources did your college provide you during this time?
My online experience was manageable. The biggest change was not being in person for labs but I still felt as though I received most of the material. Classes were optional Pass/Fail after grades were released if needed for students.

What did your college do well or poorly to support students and communities when COVID-19 first hit?
Professors had flexible schedules, university leaders provided frequent updates, resources for mental health and transition assistance were provided.

Questions about Student Life
If students are interested in your major/concentration, what extracurricular activities do you recommend they do at your college?
Biology club, research, global health.

What are common things to do on weekends? Do students commute back home for the weekend or are there events on campus?
GAME DAY!!! That’s the biggest source of fall fun at ND. But lots of dorm events as well to keep you busy.

Do you have a job during the school year, or is it common for students to have on-campus jobs? What is that experience like?
Many students hold jobs if it fits in their schedule and seem to manage it well.

Extra Questions
What advice would you give to current Shen students when applying to your college?
Show what makes you unique/how you contribute to the world (and don’t be afraid of distance).

What makes your college special to you?
The community is soooo close-knit and supportive.

What do you wish you knew about your college when you were a senior at Shen?
How special it is and that the distance from home wouldn’t matter.

Before COVID-19, what was the housing like at your college? What would you recommend to Shen seniors to find their roommates?
Roommates are random and surprisingly successful :)

How is the financial aid situation at your college?
Depends on the student, but admissions is need-blind and FA seems to be supportive.
