Questions about Academics and COVID-19

What were your classes like in your first year or in your major/concentration, especially transitioning from Shen?

Knowing critical reading skills for research projects was definitely key

What academic experiences have stood out to you at your college in either positive or negative ways?

Research opportunities (being able to present at symposiums and conventions), being able to create your own schedule

Questions about Student Life

If students are interested in your major/concentration, what extracurricular activities do you recommend they do at your college?

College Football, Leadership Academy

What are common things to do on weekends? Do students commute back home for the weekend or are there events on campus?

Would go home for long weekends, explore the college town, go on hikes, hang out with friends

Are you involved in athletics at your college? How do you balance sports, academics, and extracurricular activities?

I was. Time management was really crucial to staying afloat. I had to make sure that my class schedule would not interfere with set practice times, and communicate with coaches if there was a conflict. At the division 3 level it was nice that academics had a strong priority, although coaches did not want you to miss practice if it could be avoided with better scheduling.

Extra Questions

What advice would you give to current Shen students when applying to your college?

Go on as many college visits as you can. When I was being recruited I accepted all the over night trips I was offered. It gave me a good idea of how people interacted on campus and gave a much more inside look to the school than a campus tour through admissions would give.

What makes your college special to you?

The ability to play football and be an athletic training student at the same time was a unique feature that not all colleges allow. I met some of my best friends at Ithaca, especially through football. There are a ton of clubs though that I know non-football players loved doing.

What do you wish you knew about your college when you were a senior at Shen?

I went on 4 tours at my college before choosing Ithaca. I think it’s important to see your school as many times as you can and ask all your questions before committing. I would’ve liked to know that my head coach was going to retire after my sophomore year, that definitely changed my whole athletics experience.

Before COVID-19, what was the housing like at your college? What would you recommend to Shen seniors to find their roommates?

I lived in a freshman dorm with 1 other roommate my freshman year. I met him on Twitter/Instagram. He was another football player. I moved off campus with 7 of my friends my junior year and lived with them again senior year.

How is the financial aid situation at your college?

I was able to get a merit scholarship and a philanthropy scholarship. It was quite expensive, I had to take a lot of loans out through FAFSA

Is there anything else you'd like to share about your college experience that hasn't been addressed yet in this questionnaire?

If you have any questions about Ithaca College or D3 athletics let me know
