Questions about Academics and COVID-19
What were your classes like in your first year or in your major/concentration, especially transitioning from Shen?
My classes were primarily General Education courses during my first two semesters but I was able to take. a few courses specific to my major/minors. I think Shen prepared me well for college classes especially given the vast number of college classes that are offered during high school.

What academic experiences have stood out to you at your college in either positive or negative ways?
Brockport has an office called the Academic Success Center that I found to be very helpful during my second year. They offer advising, tutoring services, as well as lots of great places to study. The staff in the academic success center is so supportive and friendly. Within my major I have also had the opportunity to work with very caring professors who have real experience in my field of study.

How was your online learning experience at your college? What resources did your college provide you during this time?
I have taken 1-2 online classes per semester since my first semester at college. With that being said, I was very well prepared for the transition to online learning as a result of COVID-19. This experience may have been different for other students who have never taken an online class before. There were many people including professors and advisors who were always available to help students who were struggling or had questions.

Questions about Student Life
If students are interested in your major/concentration, what extracurricular activities do you recommend they do at your college?
It is important to get involved on campus during your first semester/year on campus. Each semester Brockport hosts a club fair where students can learn about the different clubs on campus including our 26 club sports teams. I am currently a member of both the Brass Ensemble and Jazz Combo. During my first year I also coached the Club Goalball team.

What are common things to do on weekends? Do students commute back home for the weekend or are there events on campus?
Brockport Student Government (BSG) hosts late night events every Friday and Saturday from 9pm-12am. There are also events that take place throughout the year during the day on Saturdays. Some events include Broctoberfest, Taste of Brockport, and PJs & Pancakes.

Do you have a job during the school year, or is it common for students to have on-campus jobs? What is that experience like?
I started working for Brockport Athletics during my first semester as an administrative assistant to the athletic directors. I have since become an event supervisor as well as the assistant to the athletic payroll coordinator. There are a number of opportunities for employment on-campus as well as off-campus. I love my job and it is so convenient that it is on campus. I think it is great to get a job while at college to learn how to manage and balance multiple responsibilities.

Extra Questions
What advice would you give to current Shen students when applying to your college?
I would say don't be afraid to reach out to Shen alumni who go to a college you are interested in. I know I love talking about Brockport and the different opportunities we offer. Also if you are able to visit a student rather than just go on an admissions tour you will be able to see more of the college.

What makes your college special to you?
The community at Brockport is one of the best things about it. There are so many different ways to get involved on campus through athletics, student government, clubs, and academically with the honors college and delta college. There are also so many people who just want to help and support students in any way that they can.
